Environment

Two thirds of the farm is under a Higher Level Stewardship scheme, helping to protect the National Nature Reserve and SSSI of Calke Park which it joins up to. Large areas of land have been taken out of arable production to produce woodland pasture and wild flower meadows, with trees being planted to reflect and enhance the beautiful and important setting of Calkepark. Other areas of the farm are being farmed in a way so that they attract ground nesting birds such as Curlew, Lapwing, Woodcock and Skylarks, helping to increase the bio-diversity of the area.

The remaining third of the land is used to grow leys of Red clover to make quality silage and mixed crops of spring grown barley and peas for animal feed. This also provides a supply of nectar for the bees in summer, winter stubble for over wintering birds to feed on and sites for ground nesting birds in the spring.
There are plans to create two new ponds for the benefit of the frogs, newts and toads.
