Flowers

Part of our environmental programme is to create species rich grassland, that’s areas with wild flowers. Around 50 acres that was arable land or intensive grassland has been earmarked for this. To introduce the wild flower seed we have been collecting seed from other corners of the farm that are already benefiting from the absence of sprays and fertiliser, and sprinkling them around. We have been mowing other local wild flower meadows and bringing the seed rich grass back, in the form of bales and immediately spreading them over the fields we wish the flowers to grow in. It is a steady process as many of the flowers need the right conditions in which to germinate and grow, soil fertility being an important factor, the poorer the soil the better chance the flowers have, which is why we can only spread small amounts of manure on these fields, which means that they do not produce much in the way of grazing grass or hay. The flowers that are beginning to grow, and not necessarily in the fields we are targeting are;
Trefoils of most varieties, Vetches, Knapweed, Great Burdett Bugle, Betony, Devils bit Scabacious, Selfheal, Cow slips, Pignut, wild red clover and many more. They are all flowers that suit the heavy clay soils.
